Community Support
We engage with communities through Neighbourhood Care Points (NCPs). These care points are centered round a kitchen, where volunteer caregivers from the community cook a mid-day meal for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs). NCPs were established by local volunteers to cater for the growing number of OVCs resulting from the AIDS epidemic. Follow this link to see how NCPs have developed into a national programme supported by Government and donors. We currently work with four NCP committees to help them go beyond feeding and provide high quality early years education and development opportunities for their most disadvantaged children. Each of the NCPs is the focal point for SHAMBA support activities, which include preschools, parenting programmes and child protection and health. The four communities are: Nkoyoyo, Roma, Makhwane and Maplazini. At Nkoyoyo the NCP kitchen was built by the Swedish Free Church and one of the church buildings is used as the preschool. At the other locations, the communities asked SHAMBA to to build kitchen/preschool structures to replace their former mud and stick kitchens. All the committees are chaired by local leaders and represent the community, parents, guardians and children attending the preschool, as well as SHAMBA.

As a result they drop out of school early and struggle to find jobs, thus perpetuating the intergenerational poverty cycle. Parenting Programme
In 2018 SHAMBA started a parenting programme called Positive Interaction of Parents with their Infants and Toddlers (PIPIT). The objective of PIPIT is to use the NCP/preschool setting to develop a programme of support for parents and carers which promotes responsive caregiving and opportunities for early learning for infants and toddlers from disadvantaged families. The PIPIT programme complements the preschool programme and helps communities support children in disadvantaged families from birth through to primary school. In the communities we work with, SHAMBA has found there is little understanding by mothers and other carers of the need for appropriate stimulation of infants and toddlers through responsive caregiving and opportunities for play. The PIPIT programme’s main focus is therefore on two of the components of nurturing care, viz: responsive caregiving and opportunities for early learning through play. At the PIPIT sessions mothers bring their infants and toddlers to the preschool where SHAMBA staff work with them to develop their knowledge of the importance of mother/child interactions and how these can be implemented in their home settings

Our aim is to develop the capacity of communities to provide disadvantaged children from AIDS affected households with an equitable foundation to lifelong development through the provision of high quality early childhood care and education.Staff

Sinethemba is a company director. She joined the SHAMBA Board in 2019. She brings many years of experience of company

Allan Low
Allan has 23 years experience as an agricultural economist in Southern and Eastern Africa. He wrote a text book on
Agricultural Development in Southern Africa based on his early work in Swaziland. Allan decided to settle here after
retiring.
Rose is the support worker at the Maplazini preschool. She joined SHAMBA in 2019 and was trained by Teresia at
Nkoyoyo. She is from the Maplazini community.
Nhlanhla Bhembe
Nhlanhla is our accounting technician. Nhlanhla completed his CAT exams and will qualify as an accounting technician
once he has been accredited with practical competencies, which we hope he will accomplish while working for us.
Joy Rockley-Zwane
Joy grew up in the UK and attended university there. She came to Swaziland in 1983 to get married. She has two
children and works as a dentist in her own practice in Mbabane.
Thembi Silombo
Thembi attended school in Piggs Peak in the North of Swaziland. After leaving school she gained an AAT accounting
qualification and is currently enrolled with UNISA pursuing her BCOM degree. In 2004, she joined FNB where she is
now a member of FNB 's Junior Board.
Nonhlanhla Dlamini
Nonhlanhla is our ECD officer at Nkoyoyo preschool. She joined SHAMBA at the end of 2015. She shadowed Mapule at
Nkoyoyo preschool during the last term of 2015 and will take over from her in 2016. She has previously been invoved
in training parents on early childhood education and development.
Teresa Magagula
Teresa is our support worker at the Nkoyoyo preschool. She has been with SHAMBA since 2011, when we started our
first preschool at Nkoyoyo. She is a resident of Nkoyoyo and a member of the Swedish Free Church, whose building
the Nkoyoyo preschool occupies.
Busisiswe Sithole
Busisiwe joined the SHAMBA management team in June 2019 as ECCE Manager/Human Resources Manager. Busi had
six years experience as a preschool teacher trainer before joining SHAMBA. She has certificates in early childhood
development, a certificate in adult education and a diploma in human resources management.
Kanyisile Mashinini
Kanyisile is our support worker at the Roma preschool. She has been with SHAMBA since 2015, when she spent the
last term shadowing Teresa at Nkoyoyo preschool . She is a resident of Roma and a former caregiver at the Roma 2
Neighbourhood Care Point.
Zethu Bhembe
Zethu has been with SHAMBA since 2016. She was the deputy ECD officer at Ntambande until May 2018, when she
moved to Makhwane as the ECD officer and opened the new school there. She has an IGCSE certificate.
Cebsile is the ECD officer at Maplazini. She has been with SHAMBA since January 2019. She is from the local
community.
Nomalizo is our support worker at Bright Future Makhwane. She trained at Nkoyoyo before she joined Zethu to set up
the new preschool at Makhwane. She is a resident of Makhwane and has a JC qualification.
Thulie is our assistant ECD officer at the Ntambande preschool. She joined SHAMBA in 2018. Prior to that she worked
as a support worker at the Nkoyoyo preschool as an employee of the Swedish Free Church. She is from the Nkoyoyo

The funds raised by SHAMBA UK are used mainly, but not exclusively, to support activities undertaken by SHAMBA Eswatini, based on agreed annual activity plans.Trustees
The trustees have all lived and/or worked in Africa. They include specialists in HIV/AIDS, health promotion, accountancy, human resources management and agriculture.

In 2019 SHAMBA commissioned a national survey on the provision of preschool education.
We worked with the Eswatini Economic Policy Analysis and Research Centre (ESEPARC) to design, implement and analyse a survey of preschool provision in Eswatini. A random sample was taken of all Grade 1 students enrolled in 2019. For each sampled student, information was obtained on household background and preschool attended, if any. From each preschool attended by a sampled student, information was collected on the quality of preschool education provided. The study was completed just before COVID struck.
